White’s City, New Mexico // 21 February
We travelled via Carlsbad especially to visit the Caverns National Park. Every caves say they are the most impressive and for our last caves on our USA trip these really went all out for the title. By far, these are the most impressive caves we’ve ever visited. There’s a timed entry to manage people moving through the caves. You enter from the Visitor Centre, walk down via a long switchback path taking you 250m deep, follow the paths through the caves – we were in there for over 3 hours!! – and then travel back up and out via elevators back to the Visitor Centre. The entrance was super impressive, seeing the cave opening and descending into it. Then walking through the cave system, in and out of different areas and rooms was crazy. Every new area had different formations. There are places where you can see how they access the caves prior to the natural entrance being discovered. The central cave area at the end is so vast, it’s crazy to think you’re underground. All above the caves the land is protected so noone causes damage to the caves below. Super impressive and such a cool experience!
