Stone Mountain Park

Atlanta, Georgia // 30 June – 4 July

Stone Mountain Park is a huge area surrounding Stone Mountain with bush land, walking trails, a lake, golf courses, hotels, a conference centre, historical buildings and a mini amusement park including a steam train that circles the base of the mountain. The campsite is by the lake and also huge. We had squirrels and chipmunks playing behind our caravan, saw fire fires at dusk and I also saw a deer. It was super busy being the weekend leading up to 4th of July. We were lucky to be there for the special fireworks as they were impressive!! The steam train could be heard from anywhere in the park so we always knew what time it was. He started up about 9am and finished about 9pm just before the light show and fireworks, the kids complained about no sleep-ins and late nights as the fireworks were on every night and finished about 10.30pm!

We spent the time exploring Stone Mountain Park and relaxing (we didn’t go into Atlanta). We were due to stay 3 nights but our truck started playing up on Sunday. After DIY attempts on Sunday afternoon Robin was lucky to get in at a Ford Service Centre nearby and spent a stressful Monday hoping it could be sorted. Luckily it was fixed by 4pm as Tuesday was the 4th of July holiday. We were able to stay at Stone Mountain one extra night which shortened our Nashville stay (we weren’t able to move dates as it was busy due to 4th of July). We were just relieved to have the truck sorted!

Climb to the top! It’s a one mile hike to the top, a gradual climb for an impressive view. It was a warm day and the heat off the granite was surprising. The breeze at the top was rewarding.
