New York City // 27 July

Our first day out and about in NYC was going to be a shorter one as the kids needed to be back for school in the evening. There was a weather warning for a three day heatwave so we set out with hats and lots of water. The first win was that the subway trains are all air-conned (awesome!) even if the platforms and connecting tunnels and walkways were not. We headed to Central Park first, which was still busy for a hit and humid day. There were lots of people jogging around the reservoir in their lunch break.

Central Park… The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, Belvedere Castle and through The Ramble.

Walk from Central Park to Grand Central Station… We jumped on the subway for a quick trip (and some air-con) down to Radio City/Rockefeller Center area. We wandered past the historic buildings towards Grand Central Station, taking in parts of 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue, and stopping for lunch in a busy cafe. Window shopping only on Fifth Avenue 😉.

One Vanderbilt… The Summit experience is on the 90th to 93rd floors of One Vanderbilt. Chris was adamant that height was not for him and as we couldn’t convince him otherwise we split up. Claire and I visited at our booked time and Robin came back later. The view was amazing! And they have different rooms you walk through over the three floors which make it magical being so high above the city.

New York City Library…While Claire and I were at The Summit, Robin and Chris went to the New York City Library nearby. Impressive!

Night-time view from our campsite… We arrived back at the caravan in time for school (6pm) and sent Robin out for pizza from a local Italian we spotted on the way back from the subway (pizza was amazing!). Once it got dark (about 9pm) we snuck out to take in the night-time skyline. The Barbie Movie was about to start at the Drive-In. It’s a sore point that the kids still haven’t seen the movie as they either had school or we didn’t get back in time 😬.
