Custer, South Dakota // 2 September
We were up early to visit Jewel Cave National Monument. The cave tours required pre-booking and as we hadn’t booked in advance we hoped to get some of the few tickets released on the day. Luckily we were in time to secure tickets for a 10.30am tour. We headed back to Custer which was just 20mins away and grabbed a yummy breakfast at the popular Miner’s Cup, then had time to explore the original Visitor Center and cave entrance before heading to the modern Visitor Center for our tour.
Inside the cave was about 10deg C so pretty chilly! It stays this constant temperature all year round. We entered via a lift and were guided through a section of the cave. There were lots of steps up and even though our tour was about an hour and a half we only visited a small portion of the cave. There’s actually still sections not fully explored.
