Craters of the Moon was an other-worldly place to explore. The hotspot of volcanic activity that is now Yellowstone National Park was once located here approx. 15,000 years ago, and created Craters of the Moon. We’ve been to volcanic areas in Lanzarote and Hawaii and this was very different again. Craters of the Moon had perfect mountains of gravel deposited by volcanic eruptions, lava cones, and lava tubes. We were even able to hike through one of the huge lava tubes! It was interesting to see how lichen and vegetation has re-established in the lava fields.
