Indiana Dunes National Park and State Park

Porter, Indiana // 15-18 August

We stayed at the State Park campground at Indiana Dunes as our base to visit Chicago. It was a great location and stunning State Park and National Park. The State Park was smaller and surrounded by the National Park, and there was a train station about 5mins from the campsite.

Entering the State Park… For some reason we don’t have any photos of the campground but it was very nice. Spacious sites with concrete pads and a short walk to the amenities. There were hikes straight from the campsite.

Hike up Mt Tom to the shore of Lake Michigan… Shortly after we arrived we took one of the trails to see the view from Mt Tom, one of the highest dunes, and check out the beach. It was super choppy and looked more like an ocean than a lake. We could just make out Chicago in the distance.

The National Park…
On our second day we stopped in at the National Park Visitor Center and chose some areas of the National Park to explore. We went to the biggest dune, Mt Baldy, which moves about a metre each year, drove along Lake Michigan, and also drove through the wetlands area. The wetlands reminded us of Florida, but no alligators here!
