Key West, Florida // 21 June
We headed to Key West, about half an hour south of our campsite, to visit the USA’s southernmost point and see the sights. Being summer it was tourist central, though I imagine it’s pretty busy at anytime. It was 32deg, sunny and humid so we were chasing the shade, any breezes and making the most of air-con in shops. Claire came with me to the Butterfly house which was amazing, filled with butterflies, small birds, and two gorgeous flamingos. The boys headed straight for Duval St (the main touristy strip) and ice-cream. Claire and I caught up with them after grabbing our own ice-creams and we spent the next few hours wandering back to our parking spot via the gated neighbourhood of Front St and then Whitehead St. We were all walked out but jumped in the car to check out the fort and beach at Fort Zachary Taylor. Apparently it’s a great sunset spot but we were in need of dinner and sunset was not until 8.20pm. We were back at our campsite and in the pool by then!
Southernmost point… We had parked nearby so decided to join the line of tourists and tick this off the list. Bonus of waiting is there’s always someone there to take your photo! The narrow streets were lined with tall palms and cute painted weatherboard homes.
Butterfly house… So many butterflies! One landed on Claire’s shoulder not long after we first walked in and stayed until we left. In the photo it looks photoshopped but it is real! There were also so many colourful small birds but you had to be super quick to spot them.
Duval St… Many, many touristy souvenir shops, cigar shops, cafes. And roosters!
Front St and Whitehead St… Gorgeous private homes and historic buildings.
Fort Zachary Taylor… Iguanas on the walk round the fort and a lovely beach, the water was still and warm like a pool.
