Niagara Falls, New York // 9 August
The weather was stunning for our day at Niagara Falls. We caught the shuttle from Fort Niagara which took us through the little towns on the way, along the Niagara River and right to the State Park. We got our tickets for Cave of the Winds straight away (as there was a fairly long wait for available times) then headed to Goat Island and Horseshoe Falls. We were trying to avoid the crowds, it was surprisingly busy for the middle of the week. I imagine it’s pretty busy all the time! Horseshoe Falls was stunning and it was funny to see the little boats below with everyone in their red or blue ponchos, one colour for the Canadian boats, the other for the American boats. We had a great view of the Falls and also the Canadian tourists on the other side. We had time to explore the Falls and have huge ice creams before our tour. It was amazing to go to the bottom of the Falls. The power of the wind and water was crazy, and it was off to the side, not the full power at all. It was fun trying not to get soaked through our ponchos (we were mostly successful). It was a hot day and some people opted to just get wet. The crowds for the boat tours were huge (a very long wait in the blazing sun) so we decided on Cave of the Winds to experience the Falls. All of the park on the US side is really beautiful and it was incredible to stand above the Falls. Before heading down in the elevator we learnt about the history of Niagara Falls, becoming the first State Park and generating electricity to send across New York State and beyond.
Cave of the Winds…
Fort Niagara… The old lighthouse and a lovely beach. Unfortunately it was late and we didn’t have our swimmers with us!
