Picking up the RV

Crescent City, Florida // 14 June

Finally the day had arrived that we would finalise the RV purchase paperwork and registration! We headed back to Crescent City one last time. Everything went relatively smoothly at the DMV and afterwards we headed back to hitch up the RV and hit the road. There were lots of checks so that we had the hitch set up correctly, a trip to the local hardware store for some extra locking pins, manoeuvring to dump the tanks so they were empty for travel, figuring out which keys locked which doors, and we were finally ready. We carefully hit the road!

You can definitely feel the RV towing behind the truck. You feel as it goes over bumps in the road (Florida roads are not in great condition) and feel it pull towards trucks as they pass us on the highway. We stick to around 60mph (which is around 100kph so I don’t want to go any faster than that!) and most traffic passes us. It appears people don’t stick to the speed limit here and so far in Florida it’s not enforced despite many signs. We choose our petrol stations carefully as we are so long (the RV is 37ft / 11m long) and I jump out and quickly check we’re not wiping anything out. Not long into our first drive we stopped and checked the air in the RV tires (it had been stationary for some time) they were all in need of a good top up. Our first successful stop gave us a bit of confidence and we were excited to be on the road!
