Yellowstone National Park – Mammoth Hot Springs

Gardiner, Montana // 19 September

After our long first day at Yellowstone we planned a shorter day and visited Mammoth Hot Springs. It was the closest part of the park to us and also one of the busiest. We were lucky to arrive and get a park just before several tour busses arrived.

There are wooden walkways around the hot spring area, which is a surprisingly large area. It was incredible seeing the different formations from the water and minerals and the different colours. In addition to the large springs and pools there were tons of tiny steam vents and springs everywhere. The area is constantly changing. It was surprising to see elk footprints near to the springs, and a mum and calf were nearby the boardwalk when we visited.
